We begin 32 moons ago...
The wind howls with unbelievable force all across the Clans. Deep in ThunderClan's territory, worried faces glance at one another as whispers barely rise above the whistling winds. Those that do penetrate the onslaught of sound bear but one subject. Elkstar is sick. Ninth life hanging in a delicate balance, the ThunderClan leader loses the battle with greencough. His deputy, Riptalon is to travel to the Moonstone to receive his nine lives and leader's name. Upon arrival, however, the patrol is nearly lost in a devastating rockfall. A rockfall in which the entrance to the Moonstone is completely blocked off. The entire cavern seems to collapse in on itself. Nameless and bearing but a single life, Riptalon returns to his Clan.
News of the Moonstone's collapse spreads to the other Clans like wildfire, followed quickly by a sense of panic. The medicine cats report feeling disconnected with StarClan. Chaos ensues as Clans who once seemed to depend upon their connection to StarClan are left alone. Efforts to dig out the Moonstone quickly prove futile. Little by little, the efforts begin to subside.
In RiverClan territory only one moon later, Icedstar is brutally murdered in an attack by rogues that steals the remainder of his lives. Hawkwing takes his place as leader of RiverClan, the second leader to step forward with one life and no name. He appoints Webbedsoul as his deputy.
WindClan is hit by a violent disease (known to humans as rabies). Their leader, Ficklestar, succumbs to the maddening virus and loses his seventh life. After the first wave, which hits most of the Clans, efforts are made to keep the virus contained within WindClan's territory. The disease remains relatively unknown, the other Clans thinking it to be some sort of freak accident. WindClan decides to keep it hidden from the other Clans. Care is taken in sending out only the healthy cats to Gatherings, or on patrols.
ShadowClan's leader, Poisonstar, loses his final life some moons later. The position of leader is left to his deputy, and therein is born the third nameless leader of the four Clans. Ficklestar is the last of the named leaders.
A rabies outbreak sneaks its way into RiverClan, taking a good number of lives, including that of RiverClan's deputy, Webbedsoul. Jaystripe is named new deputy, but RiverClan blames WindClan, believing them to have purposely planted the virus in RiverClan's camp. A short time later, Jaystripe loses a battle with whitecough and dies, leaving Hawkwing to name Hailstorm as his deputy.
Ficklestar's reign finally comes to an end as he leaves his position as leader to his deputy, Lionmask. All four Clans now bear a nameless leader. Quickly following Ficklestar's death, the ThunderClan leader, Riptalon, loses his only life.
RiverClan's leader, Hawkwing, dies in a fox attack within RiverClan's territory. He leaves Hailstorm as the new RiverClan leader.
Four Clans remain, with leaders who hold no advantage over the average warrior. Suspicion drives a rift between them, leaving old Clan rivalries to flare up stronger in a time when working together could be their salvation. What will become of the Four Clans of the Forest...
